A mum was left mortified when her entire family burst into laughter after hearing her baby's 'unique' name. She explained how she had her heart set on a name for over a decade - but never expected it to become a laughing stock in seconds.
Taking to Reddit, she said: "My family keeps laughing at our baby's name - Apollo. I like it so of course I’m going to use it. It's my kid, I can do what I want."
While she received some supportive comments about the name, most of her family members ridiculed her for it. "I've never asked for their opinions, they just hear it and of course share what they think," she added. "But it’s so aggravating and hurtful when your own father makes rude comments and makes you feel stupid for choosing it.
"I’m over it, I’m doing it anyway, but it still hurts when people laugh. It’s rude."
Venting her frustrations, she added: "If you don’t like someone’s name don’t laugh at it and act like they’re stupid.
"Have your own kids and name them what you want and leave other people alone.
"Or if you have an issue with something and are genuinely concerned the kid will have a hard life because of their name (which my family is not - they’re just rude), bring it up respectfully."
Commenting on her post, one user said: "It's rude to laugh but it might be a too much to live up to name - like Jesus or Madonna.
"Yes, it is your kid and you can do it but think carefully. Your baby isn't just for your amusement and if you go with an out there name just know you and your baby will deal with some type of judgements.
"I met an Apollo who um... wasn't an Apollo if you get me."
Another user added: "Apollo is not a bad name at all. Your father sounds like an a***hole.
There are women who name their sons Hunter, Beckett and Xaiden, Apollo is literally an Ancient Greek deity."
A third user said: "My oldest kid's name isn't even unusual and my mum scoffed at it for a bit because it wasn't the name she wanted.
"My son is now a teenager and guess what she calls him. Yup, his given name that she criticised. Apollo is a cool name!"
