'My ex wants to name our son after him - I went behind his back and chose a better name'

Coming up with a baby name that both you and your partner like isn't always easy, and it can be frustrating when all of your choices seem to get vetoed. After all, naming a baby should be something that both parents have a say in, and no one should be forced to agree with a name they don't like.

But one mum has said she completely overruled her ex-partner's choice of name for their son, as she had him legally named something else behind the dad's back.

The woman explained her former partner is called Charles Frederick, and he is a junior, since his dad also has the same name. She claimed the man doesn't go by Charles and instead uses a nickname, but still wanted to call his son Charles Frederick to carry on the family tradition.

However, the mum hated the name so much that she refused to use it, and when the little boy was born, she had him registered on his birth certificate as Dominic instead.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "My baby daddy's name is Charles Frederick. He is named after his father, therefore making him Charles Frederick the Second. He does not go by the name Charles ever, he goes by a nickname.

"He had two daughters before our relationship, and we now have a son together. He wanted to continue [the tradition] and pass his name down to his son, which would make him Charles Frederick the Third. I absolutely hate this name and the fact [my ex-partner] doesn't even go by his name [meant] I assumed that he doesn't even like his own name.

"Long story short, me and baby daddy split up during my pregnancy and he wasn't there when our son was born. [This] was my choice because I didn't want the drama while my son was being born.

"I named my son Dominic. Even if we were together, I never would have agreed to name my child Charles. [My ex-partner] hasn't said that he's p***ed off that I didn't name him Charles, but he does make slick little comments that I had a lack of judgment when naming our child."

Commenters on the post were largely on the woman's side, with many of them saying she was right to veto the dad's name choice, and others insisting she should get the final say as the person who gave birth.

One person said: "I always felt that naming your kid after yourself was a bit narcissistic and self-absorbed. My brother was a fourth generation of a shared name it caused way more problems than it was worth and they all only shared their first name."

While another added: "If you don't want to name your child that, you don't have to. You are carrying this child!"

And a third wrote: "I get that you hate the name. You had every right not to use it. You are the one who is going to be calling out that name on a daily basis."
