'My dry cleaner taught me how to get stubborn stains out of clothes - it's so simple'

If you've ever found yourself with a stubborn stain on your favourite shirt, you'll know the pain of having put it through the washing machine several times to no avail.

But one woman has claimed you don't need to throw away your clothes, as there is a way to get even the toughest set-in stains out of your garments - using nothing more than some water and a common kitchen item we all already own.

Nicole Jaques shared a video on her TikTok account in which she said her dry cleaner taught her a valuable trick when it comes to removing stains from clothes, and revealed that you can actually clean all sorts of marks - including oil stains - from clothes just by using washing up liquid.

The woman, who is from the US, said in a video on her @itsnicolejaques account: "Have you set a stain and now you're worried it won't come out? Here is the trick.

"One drop of Dawn dish soap and some warm water, let it set."

Dawn is a brand of washing up liquid in the US similar to Fairy in the UK, and Nicole took a small squirt of the soap and rubbed it into an oil stain on an orange hoodie.

She then took a spoonful of warm water and poured it over the stain, and used the back of the spoon to rub it in, creating a foam as it reacted with the washing up liquid.

Next, Nicole added a "little bit" of liquid laundry detergent, and let the mixture sit on the stains for a few minutes before throwing the hoodie into the washing machine.

After a regular wash, the woman said her clothes came out looking good as new, and she hadn't had to break the bank on any stain removers - or on a new hoodie.

In her video's caption, she wrote: "Setting a stain is one of the worst laundry mistakes I make - especially when it's on my kid's favourite sweatshirt. Am I right? Here's how to get the stain out even if you already dried the item in the dryer! I'm going to demonstrate two set stains: one is an oil stain and one is a sweet potato stain."

Almost all of us will have washing up liquid at home already, but if you need to buy some, Tesco's own brand will cost you just 45p for a 500ml bottle.
