My Delhi to bring Bollywood dancers and street food to Newcastle diners

A new Indian street food restaurant aiming to bring a taste of Delhi to the UK is opening its doors in Newcastle.

My Delhi is being opened by the Amin family, who are attempting to bring real Indian food to the streets of Newcastle.

The new restaurant, which will open on Clayton Street, will serve a variety of traditional street food, such as gol gappas, gunpowder chicken, afghani kebabs, street food burgers, and butter chicken curry.

Shah Amin, co-owner of the restaurant, said: “The concept is paying homage to Delhi. Everything we do is to honour the amazing culture of Delhi, and we are bringing what we think is amazing to the UK.

“In the UK you get traditional British-Indian curries, but we are finding people’s pallets are starting to change. They are going on holiday and there are getting totally different food. We want to get back to what Indian food is all about.”

He added: “We are bringing Delhi to the UK, and Newcastle is going to be our first location.”

To enhance the diners’ experience, the menu will include information about where in India each of the meals originates and some meals will even be presented with recommendations on how to eat them.

The restaurant also plans to celebrate special occasions with live music and Bollywood dancers, who will perform while customer enjoy their food.

Mr Amin said: “We will have events where we will have Indian dancers doing traditional dances. We want to make it an experience, not just some where you go to have a meal.

“We will invite singers and have live performances. It is part of that experience we are bringing to diners. Eating food is one thing but adding different experiences is something people want. We want to transport people to Delhi.”

My Delhi is aiming to open in early May and plans to serve food between 5pm and midnight. It will also serve a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, prepared by trained mixologists.

Many of the drinks have been inspired by Indian stories and legends, such as the Kaala Bandar Monkey Man, which takes its name from a creature similar to Big Foot.

Around 15 jobs will be created at the restaurant. If successful the Amin family plans to open more restaurants in the North East before expanding into other major cities. The family already runs the popular Delhi6 restaurant in South Shields.

Partners Gaurav and Neha Goyal who are also involved in the business said “We emigrated from India 14 years ago and since then we missed the authentic Indian cuisines and street food delicacies. We are so delighted to finally bring the true flavours of India to Newcastle.”
