A 29-year-old mother thought a cruel prank was being pulled on her when she discovered that her sister was using the same baby name she had picked for her child who tragically passed away.
The mum explained that she became pregnant with twins a few years ago, a boy they had named Henry and a girl named Daphne (both names have been changed).
She said she had become very ill during the pregnancy and opted for an early delivery, during which Daphne sadly passed away, and the mum and Henry were very lucky to survive.
Her sister had been supportive through the hugely difficult time, with the pair previously enduring a tumultuous relationship as her sibling had always tried to "one-up" her.
Their relationship seemed to improve following the tragic loss, so much so that the mum made her sister Godparent to her son Henry.
But now the heartbroken mum has been left horrified to discover that her sister is using Daphne's name for her own child after she saw her dad had built a toy box with the name emblazoned on the side.
When her sister had welcomed her own child, she refused to announce the name until a few days after the birth, when she revealed to the family the little girl was called Theodora.
But when the woman went to visit her sister and the newborn with gifts, she saw that her dad had built a toy box with the name Daphne on it, and her mum quickly explained that Theodora was her official name "on paper" but the child would be known as Daphne to everyone.
When she got upset and asked if it was a "cruel prank", her sister told her that she doesn't own the name and that she had liked it since her daughter's funeral.
The woman was stunned when her family sided with her sister, questioning why she had "caused a scene" and "ruined a happy time".
"They want me to apologise but I don’t want to,” she wrote on Reddit, before explaining that the act was not out of character for her sister.
"She hated that we got engaged before her (she has been with her partner for 3+ more years) and she threw a fit saying she wouldn’t attend our wedding unless she was engaged too.
"When I started dating my partner, she took him away from dancing with me at my birthday to tell him she thinks he would be better suited with someone like her. That she takes better care of her looks, has a better job."
The mum says she has refused to speak to her family since they sided with her sister, and other people advised her to cut ties completely with her "toxic" sibling.
One said: "Especially her saying that she liked the name since your daughter's funeral. From all the names in the world, she chose this one and worst part is, it's not even the official name for the baby. I wonder if she didn't choose that name to hurt you..."
A second wrote: "What a cruel and tasteless thing to do. Throw the whole family away. Disgusting behaviour."
And another advised: "I think you need to re-evaluate why you continue to have these people in your life and whether you want to continue to do so."
