'My daughter’s name is skanky and try-hard, I cringe whenever I say it out loud'

One mum admitted she thought she'd made a terrible mistake while naming her daughter - and even dubbed the name "skanky."

She took to Mumsnet to get advice and reassurance over her choice - as she revealed that her partner loves it.

The mother posted: "I regret the name we chose for our daughter and I don't know what to do. It's gradually been eating away at me for the past 6 months."

But she refused to write out the name, explaining that it would make her worse to hear that others didn't like it either.

However, she dropped hints, writing: "It's an unusual "nature" name and mostly used for a boy I think. That probably gives it away.

"I've got it into my head that it's too much of a try-hard name (this was obviously not our intention!) and a bit skanky!

"She's my absolute world and I can't help feel like I've let her down. I just don't know what to do."

Naturally, fellow parents were curious about what the name could possibly be, with commenters guessing; Sky, Brook, Autumn, Misty, River, Rowan, Wren, Kye, Willow, Brooke, Linden, Storm, Ocean, Phoenix.

One mum commented: "If it's River, OP, that's a gorgeous name and not skanky or try-hard."

Another added: "I also assumed River or Rowan as they're the main nature names I can think of that are more male but also used for girls. I think both of them are much nicer for girls if I'm honest."

A third commented: "If it’s Oakley I’d change it tbh."

"I also love Rowan for a girl! It's not in the same league as Roman for a boy IMO - sounds lovely and foresty but also reminds me of Rowena," wrote another.

The mum confirmed later on that the name had been identified correctly - but wouldn't specify what it was, furthering the mystery.

And she said that people's opinions had confirmed her fears - she didn't like the name.

She wrote: "The more I’ve thought about it after reading the comments, the more I know I’ve made the wrong choice.

"I’m at the point where I don’t like telling people what her name is. It’s not that she doesn’t suit it - it’s other peoples opinions (which is silly I know) and more so how I feel about the name."
