'My daughter is demanding I pay for her holiday - she earns more than me'

A mother has received backlash from her eldest daughter after not giving the same amount of money to her family that she did for her youngest for a big group trip, despite them earning massively different amounts. The mum took to the 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' forum on Mumsnet to explain that her eldest daughter is married and both of them earn a very comfortable amount, while her youngest daughter is a single mother who works part time and does not get a lot of support from the father.

The mum explained: "My 2nd girl is a single mother (father and his family offer no support at all) to my granddaughter."

She continued by saying that her youngest has recently got away from a very difficult relationship and is still feeling the effects of it.

The entire family is planning a big trip away with both daughters and their families but this has caused a bit of a rift between the eldest daughter and her mum.

The mum explained: "We all want to go on a big holiday, it would mean I will have to pay for the daughter who is a single mum.

"The other thinks I should pay the equivalent for her family, her response was, why should I be penalised because we have good jobs."

However, her eldest daughter earns more than her mother and it would mean her mother would have to take the money from her savings for both daughters to go on the trip.

She said: "I think she is being incredibly selfish as I cannot afford to pay for both.

"There have been other scenarios over the years, where said daughter has shown resentment and jealousy of other daughter, I look after her child more, she has no one else at all and has to work."

In response, many have been quick to support the mother who wrote the post as one said: "She earns more than you but thinks you should pay for her family to go? She’s being incredibly cheeky. I thought this post was going to be about the other sister being jealous, but it’s actually the more well off one being jealous! She’s being awful to you."

While another replied: "I'd also remind her that if anything drastically changes in her life, she could be in exactly the same position as her sister."
