My CV is fine and my interviews go well, but I never get the job

Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

During the last year, I’ve had nearly 20 unsuccessful interviews for paralegal/trainee solicitor roles. I must have an impressive CV as I seem to have no problem being shortlisted, and it’s not as if I go to pieces in interviews: there have been a few which I felt confident about and was convinced went well. I usually ask for feedback afterwards but few firms respond, and those that do haven’t had anything particularly helpful to say (the job went to a more local candidate, or to somebody with more relevant experience).

I had a mock interview with my careers tutor and his verdict – with which I agree – was that I come across as perfectly competent; it’s just that there’s always somebody else who has the edge. Basically, I think my problem stems from the fact that I’m a naturally quiet person so am never going to have that elusive “wow factor”.

I am working at the moment, but it’s not what I want to do: the subject area doesn’t interest me and I feel anonymous in a huge department – I’m much better suited to working in a small team.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances, or should I just accept that I can’t change my personality so need to set my sights lower?
