'My brother was failed by the Army': Sister of soldier who hanged himself blames military

A grieving sister is blaming the Army for the suicide of her Afghan war vet brother.

Dad-of-six Alan Watts, 29, hanged himself in his flat last month after years of battling post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression.

Anita Hooson, 38, told the Sunday People: “Alan was failed by the Army. He was sent to war to fight and kill and when he returned there was no help.”

The former Kingsman in the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment had nightmares and flashbacks from Afghanistan and told Anita he had “seen and done things none should have to see or do”.

Alan is one of 13 serving and ex members of the Armed Forces believed to have killed themselves this year.

At least 80 are thought to have committed suicide last year.

Anita said Alan was changed by a six-month tour in 2009.

She said: “He was happy go lucky but after Afghanistan he became very moody and very insular.

“Alan had tried to commit suicide twice before and was diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety and depression by his GP.

“I’m devastated by what has happened. He was lovely, kind and gentle.”

The Sunday People’s Save our Soldiers Campaign is calling for the Government to improve treatment for vets and service personnel suffering from mental health issues.

An MOD spokesman said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Kingsman Alan Watts.”

He said spending on mental health has increased and a 24/7 helpline set up.
