'My brother hates the dress I bought for his wedding - but I can't afford a new one'

Attending a wedding with a strict code can end up taking a lot of your headspace up - especially if you're really struggling to find something in the designated shades because they're not really your usual colours of choice.

One woman took to Reddit's 'Am I the a**hole' forum to explain that her brother was due to get married in spring, and he and his bride-to-be had announced that there was a colour palette guests must adhere to. She explained that the colours were 'green, silver, black, and gold'.

She made an error, however, when she assumed that they were wedding party colours, and bought a 'dark red dress' to compliment the colours - rather than a green, silver, black, or gold outfit.

The woman was baffled that there was a specific colour palette for the wedding (Stock Image) (Getty Images)

She wrote: "So my brothers getting married this spring and they announced a colour palette (green, silver, black and gold). I assumed these were wedding colours and bought a dark red dress to match. Apparently, wedding guests are supposed to wear outfits that are part of their colour pallete instead of the normal don't wear these colours scenario.

"It was highly suggested I buy a new dress in the right colours so that I blend in and don't look stupid. I said no, I don't have the money to buy a new dress and, can't return the one I bought as it's past its return date."

She then added an edit to clarify that she'd spoken to the bride, who said she 'didn't care' - claiming that she'd later changed her tune.

She continued: "To clarify, I spoke to the bride when their pallet was announced to see if she specifically wanted us in those colours. At the time she said 'I don't care wear what you want' and is now saying she wants us in these specific colours.

"She helped me look for dresses and didn't say anything about colours wanted until after it was bought. I am not in the wedding party and am just a guest."

People were baffled about the fact that guest colours were dictated at this wedding, with many saying that the woman was not in the wrong.

One wrote: "Since when are guest colours dictated? You're not in the wedding party, right? If not, you're not the a**hole."

Someone fumed: "People need to f*** off now with all this wedding bulls***."

Another pointed out that where there are too many rules, people have less fun, commenting: "Those weddings with annoying rules no one remembers fondly..."

"Next they'll be told what underwear to wear", one joked, and someone joked: "Purple thongs only. iT's mY sPeCiAL dAY."

Others were apprehensive about the fact the woman didn't have anything in those colours in their wardrobe, commenting: "There isn't a single black dress in your closet or that a friend can loan you that would be appropriate? Seems like a weird hill to die on where most of us have two or three black dresses in our closet or a friend our size."

"If you're not in the wedding party, wear a) whatever the formality level dictates, and b) not white", a Redditor raged.
