'My bridesmaid's attempt to honour her late mum at wedding resulted in screaming match'

A newlywed has divided opinion after evicting a wedding guest who broke her strict dress code. The guest in question was a bridesmaid, who ignored the bride's request not to wear a purple dress.

But the bridesmaid, who wore the gown in honour of her late mum, slammed the bride's actions as "selfish". Keen to discover if she'd been in the wrong - or if she had a right to enforce her rule, the bride took to Reddit.

In her post, she explained she's set out her colour theme for the bridal party months in advance. "My family and I grew up on the seaside and have always been close to the ocean.

"I made it extremely clear to all of my bridesmaids that they were to wear blue, a coral pinky colour or pastel green. Everyone agreed and seemed to love my choices," she explained. However, the bride later discovered one member of the group was not on board, and their difference of opinion led to a dispute.

During lunch, a friend, named Anna in the post, asked the bride to make an exception.

"Anna's mother sadly passed away in January this year. Her mother was the light of her life and ever since she passed, Anna has been understandably uptight and distant. I have helped Anna throughout her entire grieving time," the bride explained.

She added: "Anna's mother always loved the colour dark, vibrant purple. Ever since then Anna would buy everything purple if there was a purple choice."

So when the pair met up a few weeks after Anna's mum died - and a few months ahead of the wedding - Anna wanted to know if she could wear purple for the big day, too.

The bride-to-be told her no, as her theme meant a lot to her - and she later reminded her during another conversation about dresses. But her friend went ahead with her plan anyway.

"Well, when the wedding rolled around Anna showed up in a purple dress," the post outlined. "I asked her why she had gone against my wishes and that she either had to change or leave. To this she told me to stop creating a scene and that I was being dramatic and disrespectful. Anna broke out in a screaming match and called me and my family 'Insensitive, selfish b*****s." She was escorted out the door screaming."

Later, the bride received messages from Anna's friends and family telling her "Anna was going through a lot" and that she "was being an a****e."

However, several commenters disagreed with their verdict after reading the bride's side of the story. One person replied: "If she's grieving so deeply that she really needed to wear that color, she should have offered to step down as bridesmaid. As a guest, she could wear the purplest purple that ever purpled without an issue."

Another thought: "I understand wanting to pay tribute to her mother, but it isn't her day. Absolutely not her day." Meanwhile, someone pointed out: "It's extremely normal for bridesmaids to have to wear the color the bride chooses.

"You were already being more flexible than a lot of brides, because you gave your bridesmaids three colors to choose from. Most brides will just say, this is the dress you will be wearing, and then if you want to stay a bridesmaid, you wear the dress."
