'My brakes stopped working': Mum and daughter's horror after hit-and-run driver slams into car then speeds off

A mum has described the terrifying moment a hit-and-run driver ploughed into the side of her car - then sped off. Anne-Marie Gregory and daughter Amy Buckley were travelling to see Amy’s dad when a mystery vehicle came out of a junction and slammed into the driver’s side door in Hyde.

Anne-Marie, from Glossop, said the impact of the car left her without the use of her brakes, which meant she had to swerve down a side street to avoid hitting the car in front of her. The Pretty Little Thing worker, 35, and her 13-year-old daughter have been left with whiplash and battling constant pain.

“He drove straight into my car,” the mother-of-two said. “My brakes then cut out and I could not stop the car.

"The driver's side door could not open but when I eventually got out and went around the corner the car that hit me was gone. I honestly could not believe it when I saw he was gone. I was really shocked and I just could not get my head around it.

“I can’t move my neck forwards or backwards because of the whiplash. The muscles are really tight.

“My daughter has said that her lower back and neck are hurting. It is horrible. It all happened so quickly. I cannot believe I managed to stop the car without hitting anyone on that street [St Mary’s Road].”

The import and customs specialist at Pretty Little Thing is appealing for CCTV footage to help catch the driver. Based on the marks left on Anne-Marie’s car, the driver may have a white or silver car, she believes. The smash took place on Saturday at 4.35pm in Talbot Road, Hyde.

Residents she spoke to immediately after the crash said the junction on Talbot Road is an accident hotspot. Anne-Marie has been forced to shell out hundreds of pounds to get her car fixed. Even if the damages are covered by her insurance, she would have to pay the excess and lose her ‘no claims bonus’ of 10 years.

She assumed that the driver that hit her was either inexperienced, had a stolen vehicle or had no insurance. “There is nothing in my insurance policy that covers uninsured drivers,” Anne-Marie said.

At the time of the crash there was heavy traffic, which she said was probably the reason the driver took the risk to come out. Anne-Marie is pleading for anyone with CCTV to come forward.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: “On June 19, police received a report of a failure to stop collision on Talbot Road, Hyde, which occurred on June 18 at around 4.35pm.

“Officers are currently investigating the incident and are following up on a number of lines of enquiry in an attempt to locate the offender.”
