'My boyfriend won’t propose unless I lose weight, I only gave birth six months ago'

Even the dyed-in-the-wool cynics, who claim they've heard it all, enjoy a good marriage proposal story.

Sadly for every high, there is a low, and one woman has shared exactly how devoid of romance a (sort of) proposal can be.

Citing perhaps everyone's worst nightmare, one mum shared how her boyfriend won't propose to her unless she loses weight.

Taking to Mumsnet, she explained that her partner recently made the comment in front of a pal - and asked whether she was overreacting or not.

She wrote: "A friend came round last night and we got talking about someone we know who had just got married.

"Friend said to me in a lighthearted way: 'When is it your turn?' to which he said 'I’ve told her I’ll propose when she loses weight.'

"He has said this to me in the past, but I let it go over my head at the time. But as he has said it again, he must really mean it which hurts a lot.

"I’m in two minds as to whether I am overreacting.

"One part of me thinks it may be his way of ‘trying’ to spur me on to lose weight and in his mind thinks he’s giving me a kick up the arse and trying to be helpful.

"Or whether he’s being a total d*** and I should consider if I want to be with him let alone marry him."

The mum, who gave birth to her second child six months ago, added: "My weight doesn’t affect my health at all. No health issues. We have been together 9 years, live together and have 2 children.

[My] friend didn’t say anything at the time, I could sense she felt a bit awkward but after she left she text me to see how I was.

"Overall, the relationship I thought was ok. But now obviously I’m having doubts about everything."

Lots of fellow Mumsnet users had similar advice for the woman.

One wrote: "Do you want to lose weight? You could very quickly lose 14/15 stone…"

Another added: "Lose 11 stone of useless flesh instantly by dumping him."

A third commented: "Wow, he said that in front of your friend?! That incredibly cruel.

"I understand that he thinks he’s giving you a good incentive, and maybe it’s coming from the right place, but he’s really going about it the wrong way and I’m not surprised that you feel hurt.

"I would feel very embarrassed that it was said in front of your friend too."
