My biggest regret from my dorm room days is not buying this retro-inspired mini fridge

Galanz teal retro-inspired mini fridge inside of a modern kitchen.

You don’t realize how much you take basic comforts for granted until college: hot water, privacy, quiet, fresh food. That last one hit hard during my freshman year – the first and only year I lived in a dorm room.

I had a mini fridge-freezer combo. It got cool, but never cold, which in early-September Tucson felt like slow torture. Forget chilled sparkling water (I gave up on that fantasy by week one); my fruit would spoil. The frozen boxed meals I thought I’d cleverly stashed for late-night snacking? Mushy cardboard within days. And worst of all: it was ugly.

Correction – hideous. Easily the biggest eyesore in my otherwise meticulously decorated dorm room, which I’d spent weeks curating like my life depended on it. I’ve never forgotten that fridge. And if I could go back and change one thing, I wouldn’t have let my roommate bring in that off-white monstrosity. I would’ve added a chic retro fridge to my college dorm room checklist and bought my own.

Compact but capable, this 3.2 cu. ft. retro-inspired mini refrigerator sits flush against the wall and is just as pretty on the inside, featuring two glass shelves, a 2L bottle basket, and built-in can dispenser keep everything organized, even in tight quarters.

At 16.5” D x 19” W x 31” H and 43 lbs, it slides under most desks without breaking your back on move-in day. I love it in light coral, which sounds fanciful, but reads more like a warm neutral.

Still, the real clincher here is the freezer. The one dorm room essential I needed most – and the one my college fridge failed most spectacularly at. This one comes with a spacious chiller compartment and even an ice cube tray. And unlike the off-brand box I suffered through, this one actually works (per the 1,200+ people who gave it a glowing 4.3-star average).

Oh, and since this is college, I’ll also point out there’s a bottle opener built into the side. Do with that what you will.

My freshman-year fridge experience was scarring for fledgling Julia – a girl who would later become a design-obsessed style editor – but maybe I can finally begin to heal by helping others avoid the same fate. Aesthetics matter. So do cold snacks. Both can coexist.
