A sequel to the 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding is officially in development, nearly three decades after the original film captivated audiences worldwide. Sony Pictures confirmed in July 2025 that it has commissioned a new screenplay, with Past Lives writer-director Celine Song attached as the screenwriter.

The sequel is still in early development, with no cast or release date confirmed, but initial reports suggest the project is being treated as a serious continuation of the beloved original.

Studio Announcement and Script Development Underway

Sony Pictures has greenlit the sequel as part of its strategy to revive successful legacy titles. According to Variety, the studio has brought on acclaimed filmmaker Celine Song, whose recent works include Past Lives and Materialists, to write the script. Song has not been announced as director, and no other key crew members have been named at this stage.

The original film, directed by P.J. Hogan and starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett, became a global box office hit, grossing over $299 million, per IMDB, and cementing its status as a romantic comedy classic. Sony has not disclosed details regarding the tone or structure of the sequel but has confirmed the project is actively being developed.

Cast Discussions and Possible Returns

While the studio has yet to confirm any returning cast members, there are indications that discussions are taking place. Dermot Mulroney, who portrayed Michael O'Neal in the original, stated earlier in July via an interview with New York Post that there was 'talk of a sequel' and that legal conversations had begun.

Julia Roberts has also previously expressed openness to revisiting her role as Julianne Potter. In a 2023 interview, she noted her interest in exploring where the characters might be today. However, there has been no official confirmation of Roberts' involvement as of the time of writing.

Cameron Diaz, who played Kimmy Wallace, has not commented publicly on the sequel, though her return remains a central point of speculation among fans.

Rupert Everett's character, George Downes, has also been widely mentioned in discussions about potential comebacks.

Speculation Surrounding the Plot

Plot details for the upcoming film remain undisclosed, but early speculation suggests the story could revisit the lives of Michael and Kimmy as a married couple, potentially exploring the challenges of long-term commitment. Another possible angle includes Julianne attending another wedding, reversing the dynamics of the original film.

With Celine Song known for her emotionally resonant storytelling, it is likely the sequel will delve into themes of growth, relationships and the complexities of adulthood. However, the studio has not released any official information on the storyline.

Release Date Remains Unconfirmed

As of late July 2025, no release date has been announced. The project is still in its scripting phase, and Sony has not provided a timeline for filming or production. Given the early stage of development, a theatrical release is unlikely before 2026 or 2027.

The sequel's progress will depend on casting, directorial appointments, and final script approval. Sony's decision to move forward suggests confidence in the film's cultural relevance and audience appeal.
