'My aunt ruined my partner's pregnancy announcement - she made it all about her'

When you announce your pregnancy to your family, you expect them to be happy for you and support you through the process of welcoming a baby into the world.

But for one man and his girlfriend, sharing their exciting news was quickly overshadowed by other members of his family - as his aunt decided to use their special moment to share her own life update.

Posting anonymously on Reddit, the man explained he and his girlfriend were excited to tell his family that they were expecting their first child together, and had gathered at his grandparents' house for the big reveal.

But just minutes after they told his parents and his grandparents, his aunt burst into tears and turned the attention onto herself - as she revealed her own son was planning to adopt a child, and she was against the idea.

The man wrote: "My girlfriend and I recently found out that she’s pregnant. We’ve been dating about two years and while this was in the plans it’s come sooner than expected. We’re both excited and have been waiting to tell family for weeks.

"My grandmother called and asked if we could come over and hang her new smart TV at her house. On the way over we came up with a plan on how to tell everyone. Once the TV was hung I would go over all the new features of the TV as this is the first time they’ve had a smart TV. We would tell them about screen mirroring and that’s when I would mirror my phone and bring up the ultrasound photos.

"Cue the moment. We’ve been there for about two hours and have everything mounted and completed. Now mind you my aunt lives at my grandparents and has been upstairs the entire time. Once I mirrored my phone and showed them everyone was very excited.

"My mother, who was also there, began crying because she was so happy. We have been talking for about only two minutes before my aunt came downstairs and began crying, but she was obviously upset about something.

"She stated that she also would like to make an announcement. She then proceeded to tell everyone that her son and daughter in law are preparing to adopt a newborn and that my aunt was against it."

The man was completely baffled by his aunt's actions, especially as she had decided to interrupt them at the exact moment they made their announcement, rather than telling them earlier in the day.

He added: "We listened to her cry on and on about this for about 10 minutes before I had had enough. I told her that she was making this special day where my girlfriend and I announced to the family all about herself and how she feels about something completely different.

"Mind you, we had been there for two hours and she waited two minutes after we announced this for her to come down and say this. She immediately went into defensive mode and started trying to guilt-trip me and how I reacted so we just left.

"My girlfriend sat quietly taking this all in and she actually found this whole encounter pretty wild and hilarious. My grandparents didn’t say much during this fiasco as they have come to just deal with her."

Commenters on Reddit were equally confused, with many saying the man's aunt was out of line by making the day about herself.

One person said: "She didn't have to announce it right at that moment. You are not at fault here. Also, you mentioned that your girlfriend found the situation hilarious. She is a keeper. Congratulations!"

While another added: "She took a happy moment and turned it into awkward therapy. Read the room."
