MV Hondius: What the World Health Organisation has said about deadly hantavirus outbreak

  • Two British nationals, medically evacuated from a cruise ship affected by hantavirus, are reportedly improving, according to global health officials.
  • A 69-year-old British man was taken to a private health facility in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 27 April, where he is currently receiving care.
  • Another Briton, 56-year-old Martin Anstee, was transported from the MV Hondius on Wednesday to the Netherlands for specialist medical treatment.
  • Dr Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organisation confirmed that the patient in South Africa is doing better, and the two patients in the Netherlands are stable.
  • While the WHO assesses the public health risk as low, Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that more cases of the Andes virus, a hantavirus variant, could emerge due to its incubation period of up to six weeks.
