'Mutual interest' – Former Bayer Leverkusen boss talks up chances of landing Bristol City job

Former Bayer Leverkusen and Fenerbahce manager Christoph Daum has confirmed his interest in the vacant Bristol City job.

The Robins are searching for Lee Johnson’s successor after he was sacked seven days ago, and the German claims there is “mutual interest” in him taking the role.

The 66-year-old was exclusively revealed as a candidate to take over at Ashton Gate by Bristol Live earlier in the week, and today he has talked up his chances.

"Yes, it is true that a friend who lives in Bristol has made contact with Bristol City,” Daum told SPORT1.

“No concrete discussions have yet taken place with Bristol City.

“The son of the owner Jon Lansdown also thinks I am a suitable candidate as head coach for Bristol City.

“So far the mutual interest has been exchanged and the next few days will show to what extent everything is concrete.

"Bristol City is a club with enthusiastic fans, excellent infrastructure and solid structures.

"English football, regardless of whether it's a Premier League or Championship, is excellently organized. I see it as an interesting challenge to play a part in shaping it.

Daum has an impressive CV which spans four decades as a coach, managing the likes of Stuttgart, Besiktas, Eintracht Frankfurt and the Romania national team.

He has been out of work since 2017 and would be keen to return to the dugout with the Robins, but he faces stiff competition for the job.

City CEO Mark Ashton has revealed the club has been inundated with interested candidates, with Chris Hughton, John Terry and Steven Gerrard among those priced up by the bookies.

“Bristol City will calmly choose the right head coach for them," Daum added.
