Mutual interest between Chiefs and Odell Beckham Jr.?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Multiple reports Wednesday linked free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid wouldn't confirm any potential interest between the two parties, however, instead deflecting questions about a possible union with the star free-agent receiver to general manager Brett Veach.

"That's Veach's area and he looks at everybody," Reid said. "You guys know how he does. I've been in a bunker trying to get my work done, so I don't know.

"I haven't really talked to him about that. That's where we're at. I don't have a whole lot to give you, but I know he looks at everybody."

Released from his contract with the Cleveland Browns, Beckham has reportedly narrowed his shortlist of teams for which he'd next prefer to play. He reportedly has the Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints on that list.

Beckham had 232 yards on 17 catches (targeted 34 times) with no touchdowns in six games with the Browns this season. He did not play in the season opener when the Browns visited the Chiefs and lost, 33-29, at Arrowhead Stadium.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Wednesday that he hasn't been asked to play recruiter with Beckham on behalf of the Chiefs. Like Reid, he deflected deeper inquiries to Veach.

"Obviously he's a really good football player," Mahomes said. "He's done a lot of great things in this league, but I'll leave that stuff up to Veach.

"He does a great job of bringing great players in. He's always looking around and trying to see what he can do to make the team better, and so I'll let him handle that."

In his prime, the 29-year-old Beckham was one of the NFL's top wide receivers, producing four 1,000-yard seasons with the New York Giants (2014-16, 2018) and three Pro Bowl selections. The Giants traded Beckham to the Browns in 2019, and he had a 1,000-yard campaign in his first season with Cleveland before being derailed by injuries in 2020.

The Chiefs' wide receiver corps currently includes Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle, Demarcus Robinson, Josh Gordon and Marcus Kemp.

The Chiefs this season added Gordon, another talented receiver — though one with a history of suspensions — through a high-profile free-agent contract. So far, he has one catch on four targets through four games.

Hill currently leads the team in receiving, with 68 catches for 772 yards and six touchdowns.
