A soup kitchen that was forced to close as a result of the coronavirus pandemic is raising funds to find alternative ways to provide food for the most vulnerable.

Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen was open seven days a week before the virus hit the UK and forced the country into lockdown.

It provided food and live music for those in need of a hot meal or socialising.

But the charity was forced to close in March and reduced its operation from 50 meals a day to just delivering takeaways on Thursdays and Sundays.

The charity has also partnered with the Salvation Army’s homelessness services to receive referrals for those in desperate need as a result of the pandemic.

Martin Stone, leader of the kitchen, told the Standard: "The van is essential for picking up food and for the deliveries but this is not just about food distribution it’s about acting as a medium for those who are in need and helping connect them with the right services too.

“There are people who are desperate and falling through the hoops and we’ll be there to listen to them and provide what we can — in a socially distanced way.”

The kitchen, which was first launched in 1994 and is still located and administered at the Baptist Church, Dukes Avenue, has so far raised £17,984,00 for the van.

Funds will also go towards the running of the van and deliveries. To donate visit www.peoplesfundraising.com/donation/super-kitchen-van
