Muswell Hill residents raise funds for Christmas tree after last year’s ridicule

Muswell Hill’s Christmas tree last year sparked widespread ridicule after pictures of the pitiful pine went viral.

This year organisers in the north London enclave splashed out £4,000 on a 20-foot spruce after a sponsorship and crowdfunding campaign.

Last year’s puny spruce was derided because it barely peeped over the surrounding fence.

It was put up in St James’s Square by a volunteer group who had planned a 15-foot tree, but were forced to scale back because of the cost of insurance and complying with health and safety requirements.
