Muslim woman's photo goes viral as she poses next to group of bigoted protesters

A Muslim woman smiled in the face of bigotry by posing in front of a group of protesters for a photo which has gone viral.

Shayma Ismaa'eel posed for the picture with a big smile as men holding placards denouncing Islam and its prophet Mohammed stood behind her.

The protesters had stationed themselves outside an Islamic conference in Washington DC for three days shouting anti-Muslim slogans.

In a bid to combat their hatred, Ms Ismaa'eel, 24, who works with autistic children, asked her friend to snap a photo of her.

"I asked the police officer if I could stand at the kerb in front of the men. The officer said 'no,' and in that moment, I felt like the biggest rebel," she told CNN.

"I smiled so hard in the picture and the man started directing his speech toward me. Silly things like 'your face should be covered,' 'And you know it's a cult when you're walking outside wearing pajamas'", she continued.

She said it wasn't the first time she'd taken a photo like this - in 2017 she did something similar while she was at college.

But Ms Ismaa'eel was shocked when her latest snap went viral on Twitter where it was liked more than 150,000 times and Instagram where it received more than 100,000 likes.

"I'm a low-key person," she said.

"I'm still shook that it reached more that 200 likes at most. It's refreshing to see so many people supporting."

Although Ms Ismaa'eel's family warned her to be careful after the photo was shared so widely, she says she hasn't received any threats.
