A Muslim group have travelled to a fire-ravaged town in Australia to cook meals and offer support to firefighters as they work to battle the bushfires.

The Newport Islamic society went to the aid of Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Brigade in East Gippsland after seeing the devastating effect of the blazes .

They arrived to cook sausages for the firefighters, who were exhausted after tackling the flames for over a week.

Along with cooking for the volunteers, the group also brought five truckloads of items to be used in the area.

They worked overnight on Friday sorting out the much-needed items into different sections, and left on Saturday morning at 3am.

Volunteer Lookman El Kurdi told Daily Mail Australia: "It was very emotional to see how tired and drained they were.

"They were just exhausted. It felt really good to at least give them a feed and prey for them and show we are thinking about them."

He added: "We were seeing all these bushfires that were happening around Australia and felt we needed to do something. We put the call out and within 48 hours we had collected so many items."

It came as celebrities around the world began raising funds for the bushfire appeal .

Australian Pop star Kylie Minogue pledged $500,000 (£265,000) to charities including Red Cross Australia.

Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge announced that she will be auctioning her Golden Globes outfit.

The wildfires, which began in September, have so far burned an area roughly the size of Croatia, killing at least 24 people and destroying 2,000 homes.
