Channel 4’s controversial documentary Muslim Drag Queens drew more than 1 million viewers on Monday night.

The documentary featured Asif Quaraishi, an activist who performs in clubs as Asifa Lahore, who put police on alert for fear of reprisal following its broadcast after receiving death threats last year.

The 60-minute documentary, which was narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, drew an average audience of 1.1 million viewers and a 6.9% share of all TV viewing between 10pm and 11pm.

The documentary followed the difficulties faced in the lives of three gay Asian drag queens and explores the largely clandestine so-called “Gaysian” community in the UK.
