Muslim Council demands equalities watchdog probe Tory Islamophobia 'deceit'

The Muslim Council of Britain today demanded the Equalities and Human Rights Commission probe the Tories’ “deceit” over Islamophobia.

The body called for the watchdog - which is already investigating anti-Semitism in Labour - to look into the Conservative Party after saying Tories accused of Islamophobia were “secretly” restored to membership.

Meanwhile Lib Dem candidate Chuka Umunna claimed Boris Johnson should be thrown out of the Tories for showing prejudice himself.

He tweeted: “Boris Johnson says Tory party members guilty of Islamophobia and prejudice "are out first bounce" and will be ejected from the party.

“Clearly not - he is still a member.”

It comes after the MCB lent support to the Chief Rabbi, who yesterday warned Labour had let the “poison” of anti-Semitism take root.

The Council said: "We agree with the Chief Rabbi's observation that 'some politicians have shown courage but too many have sat silent'."

Jeremy Corbyn prompted fresh anger last night by refusing four times to apologise for the issue in the party.

Speaking today, MCB spokesman Miqdaad Versi said Labour was not the only party with a problem with racism.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There’s unfortunately a structural problem with Islamophobia within the Conservative Party where Islamophobia is not only tolerated, but people who have engaged in Islamophobia in different ways are let back into the party if any action is taken in the first place.

“And when they’re secretly let back in we don’t know about it, there’s no transparency, the processes themselves are not clear and unfortunately people don’t have any trust in the way things happen.”

He added: “They’re engaging in deceit, for all intents and purposes, to the public. And that’s a problem….

“We can’t have this deceit where even actually the Prime Minister goes around saying there’s zero tolerance, people are out on the first bounce - there’s just example after example after example where that’s not the case.”

Mr Versi said a Tory candidate repeatedly shared things from far right who remains a candidate.

Asked if the EHRC - which is currently probing anti-Semitism in Labour - should also look at Tory Islamophobia he said: “They definitely need to look at this.

“We as the Muslim Council of Britain sent in a complaint where we highlighted and documented case after case and issues with the process and the failure to understand the denial of the party when it comes to Islamophobia.

“We hope they will look into this and take it seriously, given the scale of the issue.”

Boris Johnson was investigated at the time when he referred to veil-wearing Muslim women as “letterboxes”.

However, an inquiry took no action against him and he remained a Tory member.

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “We celebrate and value the contribution Muslims have made and continue to make to our great country. We actively support freedom of worship and the role of faith in public life.

“Our manifesto has committed to ensuring everyone’s rights are respected and everyone is treated with fairness and dignity.

“The Conservative Party will never stand by when it comes to prejudice and discrimination of any kind. That’s why we are already establishing the terms of an investigation to make sure that such instances are isolated and robust processes are in place to stamp them out as and when they occur.”
