Muslim charity receives much needed PPE for conducting coronavirus-related funerals

A charity, which has conducted almost 30 coronavirus-related funerals for Muslims in Bolton, has been gifted some much needed PPE.

Muslim Hands has donated 20 personal protective equipment kits to Bolton Council of Mosques (BCoM), which represents 32 mosques across the borough. The kits include a Hazmat suit, visor, foot covers, and N95 mask.

Emerging evidence suggests that Covid-19 is having a disproportionate effect on people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.

Saeed Muhammad, funeral director at Bolton Council of Mosques, said: "So far we have conducted around 29 Covid-19 related funerals and this equipment will be paramount in continuing to ensure the health and safety of those performing the burial service."

Shakil Sidat, Muslims Hands programmes director, added: "It is imperative that Muslim burial councils and funeral services across the UK have access to the correct amenities, not only for protection against the disease, but to carry out their moral responsibility of honouring the deceased in the best way possible.

"We have been fortunate to have access to this scarce resource and are working hard to deliver it to those, within the funeral industry, who are in urgent need of it.

"We are assured that our current distributions during the month of Ramadan will bring ease to those at the forefront."
