Musician Dan Sultan to fight indecent assault charge in court

ARIA award-winning singer-songwriter Dan Sultan has faced court charged with indecently assaulting someone at a party in Melbourne more than a decade ago.

Mr Sultan, who is also known as Daniel Loorham, today appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and indicated he would be fighting the accusation.

His barrister, Ruth Shann, told the court: "We've had a quick discussion but I can indicate … that Mr Loorham will be pleading not guilty."

In recent years, Mr Sultan's music career has focused on children's entertainment, including recording a kids album and appearing on Play School.

According to court documents, the 36-year-old is accused of assaulting a person in "indecent circumstances" at Brunswick, in Melbourne's inner north, in September 2008.

Court documents show the charge surrounds the issue of consent.

Mr Sultan would have just turned 25 at the time of the alleged offences.

He was charged in January this year by the Fawkner Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

Ms Shann told Magistrate Fiona Hayes that the incident involved two people "both in their mid-twenties".

Mr Sultan, who travelled from New South Wales to be in court today, spoke only briefly when he was addressed by the magistrate.

He was dressed in black and his hair had been dyed blonde.

Ms Shann initially opposed the media's application to see Mr Sultan's charges, telling the court that there would be no "surrounding context" to them, but later agreed for them to be released with some personal information redacted.

"This is someone with a young child," Ms Shann said.

Mr Sultan will return to court next month.
