Music Weekly podcast: the Civil Wars and the history of the hip-hop mixtape

Kieran Yates not only joins Alexis this week, but has come on board as co-presenter of the show. She will keeping us up to speed on such things as a "grimey breakfast". The pod is also visited this week by all-round good egg Dorian Lynskey.

First off, we send Kieran well out of her comfort zone to talk to a duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. Otherwise known as the Civil Wars. And guess what? Turns out Kieran loves a spot of country folk.

On singles club, tracks from Jack White, DVA and Willy Moon come under the hammer.

Finally: the hip-hop mixtape used to be the preserve of hardcore fans only. But in the past few years, it has become a way for new and established artists alike to emerge from the underground and make an impact on the mainstream. Our hip-hop expert Alex Macpherson gives us a whistlestop tour of the format, with sounds from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Big Krit and Kalenna.

We'll catch up on your comments in next week's show – so do leave us any thoughts below. Thanks for listening.
