As many of the housemates have said with a sigh, it can get pretty boring in the Big Brother house when the only entertainment is talk and tea. No books. No newspapers. No TV. No computer or mobile phone or Playstation. And no music. Little wonder the housemates are often heard humming a tune or starting a singalong.
But Big Brother knows the pulling power of a soundtrack and is gradually building up an eclectic record collection, including Arcade Fire, DJ Shadow, N.E.R.D, Blur and Britney. From choosing each contestant's initial profile song to pumping out tunes to accompany tasks and sounding snippets of songs during a housemate's post-eviction interview - the viewers get audio entertainment even if the housemates don't. So how does Channel 4 decide which song goes with which contestant? And could you do any better as the Big Brother DJ?
Lea's profile song is Celebrity Skin by Hole, Nikki's is SOS by Rihanna, Imogen's is Control Myself by LL Cool J feat J-Lo, while Richard's is Strict Machine by Goldfrapp. Glyn's is Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, Mikey's is Why Won't You Give Me Your Love by the Zutons, and Pete's is Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag by Pigbag.
Channel 4 said that each song "sums up what we feel their personality is that [housemates] describe themselves". But are these personal profile pop picks still relevant, now that we've got to know the original contestants? And what songs best suit the newcomers from the House Next Door?
