Music student, 20, found dead at Cardiff flat had worries about money and work, inquest told

A music student was found dead at his flat in Cardiff after worrying about issues like money and work, an inquest has heard.

Caio Wyn Ap Rhys, 20, died on January 7, 2020, after being found in the bedroom at the flat he shared with his girlfriend in Roath.

On Thursday, May 20, an inquest at Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard Caio had experienced low moods on the run up to his death. The hearing was told he worried about matters such as money, work and paying rent.

At the inquest Senior Coroner for the South Wales Central Area, Graeme Hughes, read a statement on behalf of Caio's father, Rhys ap Hywel.

Summarising the statement, Mr Hughes told the court Caio spent some time living with his father and his partner before he moved to Cardiff to study music.

The inquest was told Caio had visited his GP for concerns relating his mental health since 2018.

In October 2019 it was said the student was referred to see a specialist mental health team on an urgent basis. Evidence revealed he experienced suicidal thoughts that were described as being based on "actions of impulse." He was advised to take anti-depressants and was also in contact with the charity MIND.

One of the last people to see Caio before he passed away was his partner, Melody Sanders, who he had been living with at a flat on Malborough Road.

Mr Hughes read a statement on behalf of Ms Sanders at the inquest. Summarising the statement, he said: "We met on a music course in September 2018, and we entered a relationship.

"She said Caio had suicidal thoughts and was depressed."

In her statement provided to the coroner, Ms Sanders said Caio's stresses included "money and work". He spent some time working at the Coal Exchange before he died, but was unemployed at the time of his death.

The inquest heard the couple were behind on their rent payments at the time, but were due to meet with the letting agents to discuss how to go forward and get further advice.

Ms Sanders last saw Caio on the morning of January 7, 2020 - the day the meeting was due to take place. The hearing was told they decided to cancel the meeting, and Ms Sanders left the flat while Caio stayed at home later that day.

The statement continued: "We both rose at around 9am. Caio was moody.

"There was nothing to suggest Caio was going to kill himself or hurt himself."

Later that evening Caio was found in the bedroom of the flat. Paramedics arrived at the address at around 6.41pm, but Caio was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were also called to the scene and PC Kelly James told the hearing previous concern for welfare calls had been reported at the same address. PC James said nothing was believed to be suspicious about the death, and there was no evidence of any third party involvement.

A pathologist report issued by Dr Thomas Hockey said the medical cause of death was consistent with hanging.

Concluding the hearing, Mr Hughes said: "I am satisfied from the evidence that Caio acted deliberately and acted alone.

"I will reach a conclusion of suicide."
