Music promoters applying for weekend premises licence at Bristol youth centre

Music promoters are applying for a weekend premises licence to run dance nights at a youth club near to the city centre.

HighRise events are hoping to be granted a licence from Bristol City Council tomorrow. The licence would let them sell alcohol and play live and recorded music at the Riverside Youth Project in St Jude’s.

The promoters have used the venue up until now a few times each year, using temporary event notices. If councillors on the licensing sub-committee vote to grant a permanent licence, this would allow nights to be held there regularly.

The licence would allow HighRise to sell alcohol and play live and recorded music at the youth centre on Fridays from 6pm to 4am, and Saturdays from 12pm to 4am. The venue is on an industrial estate between Riverside Park and the A4023, the busy main road leading onto the M32.

Promoters were granted a licence by the council in 2019, to host events 15 days a year at the youth centre. The Riverside Youth Project has struggled financially in the past, and a portion of the revenues from the club nights goes towards keeping the youth centre open.

Last year the venue faced noise complaints and a licensing hearing at City Hall and the previous year the car park was used to host lockdown-compliant outdoor events. In 2014, the youth centre sold a Banksy painting for £400,000, to help its budget and stay afloat.
