CHIBA -- The large-scale music festival "Supersonic" opened Saturday at ZOZO Marine Stadium in Chiba, where a state of emergency continues due to the COVID-19 crisis.

A long line of raincoat-clad spectators lined up in front of the gate amid heavy rain from Typhoon No. 14 early in the morning. A total of 14 bands will perform during the two days until Sunday, with a total of about 20,000 people expected to attend.

Criticism of the music festival cropped up last month after more than 40 people were reported to have been infected by a cluster outbreak blamed on crowded conditions at another music event in Aichi Prefecture.

The organizers of "Supersonic" took steps such as setting up chairs in the arena's seats to prevent the audience from moving around freely. The event also prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages and urges people to wear masks.
