Music fans flock as Hit the North festival takes over venues across Newcastle

It kicked off in style with an opening party headlined by The Futureheads on Friday night and Hit the North stepped up a gear to take over Newcastle on Sunday.

The now annual event is always a big draw in the city and, coinciding with a Bank Holiday, there were plenty of takers to get a slice of live music action in 2019.

The Futureheads got things off to a riproaring start, playing classics like Decent Days and Nights and Hounds of Love and new single Jekyll to a capacity crowd at Riverside and the Quayside venue was the location for plenty more performances on Sunday.

Acts like Stay Free and Plaza got things going early doors with Soak and Shame topping the bill. Hit the North boasts 16 different stages this year - O2 Academy and Academy 2, Riverside, Boiler Shop, Digital, Underground, Head of Steam, Brewdog, The Town Wall, The Cut, Beyond Vinyl, The Bridge Hotel, The Forth and Billy Bootleggers, with a massive variety of acts entertaining at each of them.

The main stage at O2 Academy will be headlined by Jake Bugg, who is due on stage around 9.30pm after Tom Grennan.

Upstairs in Academy 2 the day got started with Creegan and will end with Ten Tonnes, who called into HMV to do a signing ahead of their slot.

Riverside is being headlined by Avalanche Party while Boiler Shop crowds can look forward to sets tonight from Catherine McGrath and Blaenavon.

The reaction on social media to Hit the North - which even has its own beer this year! - has been huge with loads of excited tweets.

A glance on Twitter sees that both musicians and music fans from all over the country have descended in Newcastle to play the festival or just soak up all the music and atmosphere.
