Music City Bowl matchup: Notre Dame vs. LSU

Dec. 30--TV/radio: 2 p.m. Tuesday; ESPN, WLS-AM 890.

Line: LSU by 7.5.

Records: Notre Dame 7-5, LSU 8-4.

Last meeting: LSU defeated Notre Dame 41-14 at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 3, 2007.

On the offensive: What will Notre Dame's offense look like with both Malik Zaire and Everett Golson playing? Zaire is better suited as a runner in the read-option game while Golson might hold the edge in the passing game, but both might find it hard to move it against an LSU defense that was first in the SEC in fewest total yards allowed.

Getting defensive: The Irish get defensive lineman Sheldon Day and cornerback Cody Riggs back, along with a host of other injured reserves, but will that be enough to slow a potent LSU rushing attack led by freshman Leonard Fournette? With freshman middle linebacker Nyles Morgan still learning the ropes, it could be a long day.

The number: 15. Wins Notre Dame has under coach Brian Kelly when the Irish don't commit a turnover. The Irish are undefeated.

The talk: Will a starter emerge for 2015 from the muddled Irish quarterback situation? Likely not, but Zaire has as good a chance to wrestle the job from Golson now than he ever has or maybe ever will over the next year.

Chris Hine's pick: LSU will wear down Notre Dame's lack of defensive depth and control the clock and control the game. Both Irish quarterbacks will struggle to move the ball until garbage time.

LSU 31, Notre Dame 17.
