Mushroom cook Erin Patterson allegedly based her ill-fated beef wellington recipe that killed three of her ex’s relatives off one she had found in RecipeTin Eats, the food brand founded by Nagi Maehashi.
As reported by ABC, on Thursday, child protection worker Katrina Cripps — who interviewed Patterson following the deadly lunch — recounted to the Supreme Court: “She told us that she had prepared a beef Wellington, mashed potato, green beans and packet gravy.
“She said that she’d found it in a RecipeTin[Eats] cookbook, and that she wanted to do something new and special.”

Cripps claimed she asked Patterson where she had gotten the mushrooms from and Patterson said they were purchased from Woolworths and an Asian grocer in the Oakleigh or Clayton area.
“She read that the ones she got from the Asian grocer would add a nice flavour to the beef Wellington,” Cripps testified.
Cripps told the court Patterson wasn’t able to find receipts that proved she’d purchased the mushrooms from an Asian grocer, assuming it may have been paid for in cash.
“She said she was going to use them in a carbonara but when she opened them they had a very strong smell. She put them in a Tupperware container,” Cripps said.
Cripps alleged Patterson then told her she had rehydrated and diced the mushrooms before putting them into the beef wellington dish.
She also told the jury she asked Patterson if she had foraged for any of the mushrooms but the accused allegedly did not answer, instead staring at her phone.
The court heard Patterson told Cripps the relationship with her ex husband Simon had recently turned “nasty”. She said her ex was allegedly restricting her from spending time with his parents.
Patterson is accused of murdering her former in-laws Don and Gail, and Gail’s sister Heather, who all died after eating a beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms at Patterson’s home.
Heather’s husband Ian Wilkinson survived the July 29, 2023 lunch and Patterson has been charged with his attempted murder.
She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
