Museums, libraries and art galleries to re-open their doors in Newport

Newport's museum and art gallery is to re-open its doors along with three branch libraries.

The Museum and Art Gallery in John Frost Square will be open to visitors from Tuesday, August 11, on an appointment basis.

To ensure physical distancing measures can be maintained, the local authority said the museum will open on alternate days from the art gallery.

The museum will open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm, while the art gallery will open at the same times on Wednesdays and Fridays.

From Monday August 10, branch libraries in Malpas, Ringland and Rogerstone will re-open for 20 hours a week, also on an appointment basis.

Central Library in John Frost Square was opened for booked appointments last month and the system has been successful according to a council spokeswoman.

Councillor Debbie Harvey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "I’m so pleased that we are able to reopen Newport Museum and Art Gallery and visitors can be reassured that measures are in place to ensure their health and well-being.

"I would ask people to follow all the guidance and not to make a visit, even if they have booked, if they are showing the symptoms of Covid-19. We all have a responsibility to protect not only our own health but also the health of our fellow residents and staff working to keep these facilities open.

"I’m sure many people will be looking forward to revisiting these much-loved attractions while others will be discovering what they have to offer, including the glimpse into the city’s history and some fine artworks, for the first time."

Books can be reserved online and residents can make an appointment to collect them at any of the branch libraries and Central Library.

A small range of unreserved fiction will be available for people to browse.

Visits will be limited to 15 minutes with a maximum of two people and must be booked in advance.

All returned books are quarantined for 72 hours while existing book loans are extended.

Library users have been asked to keep current loans at home. All fees and overdue charges remain suspended.
