It was allegedly seen driving through a green belt for a short time which prompted police officers to pursue the vehicle.

The pursuit ended outside the National Museum of Australia in Acton, near the central business district, where it reportedly crashed into a taxi.

It is alleged three people, a 15-year-old girl and two males aged 17 and 19, exited the SUV and ran into the museum, triggering a lockdown at the public facility.

"The museum enacted its own lockdown procedures while police searched for the occupants," an ACT Policing spokeswoman said.

Police found and arrested two people inside the museum and one person outside the building.

The spokeswoman said the museum reopened to visitors later that morning.

The trio is expected to face criminal charges in court on Wednesday, August 19.

The incident was followed by a separate report in Belconnen involving four different teenagers aged 14,15, 16 and 17.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the young people were arrested about midday on Tuesday after allegedly riding in a stolen white hatchback.

She said the four would be charged and that two of the young people would appear in the ACT Childrens Court on Wednesday, August 19.
