Murray River flooding in SA could expose Indigenous burial sites, elder warns

An Indigenous elder in South Australia is concerned that remains from burial sites may be washed up as floodwater surges along the Murray River.

Mannum Aboriginal Community Association chair Ivy Campbell took to Facebook last week to alert the community.

She said there were numerous burial sites along the river.

"People that loved fishing, if they passed away they were buried right there, so we have got a few along the riverbanks," Ms Campbell said.

"We've got a couple of massacre sites along the river, too, and they'll get flooded out — we just don't know when."

Authorities have warned that up to 200 gigalitres of floodwater per day may flow down the river by early December.

Ms Campbell urged people filling sandbags to be aware that there were also remains buried in dunes.

Native Australians are also raising awareness about canoe and scar trees that could be threatened by the rising water.

"Next year I think we need to do a community awareness course in the area on what could come up," Ms Campbell said.

"But if anything does find anything … ring the local council up and they'll give us a call and we can go out and have a look.

"I'm just giving awareness for people — it's not a normal thing to talk about when there's a flood around.

"If anything does come up, people might get confused between animal remains and human remains."
