WASHINGTON _ Goaltender Matt Murray left the Penguins game Wednesday night against the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center after a scary sequence when he appeared to have possibly suffered a facial injury late in the first period.
Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner was whacking at a puck near the crease. Evgeni Malkin took exception and confronted Alzer. In the process, Malkin knocked Murray's mask off then hit him in the face with the shaft of his stick.
Marc-Andre Fleury entered the game in relief with 23.7 seconds left in the period and gave up a goal to TJ Oshie on the first shot he faced.
When the Penguins returned to the ice to start the second period, Murray was on the bench, backing up Fleury. No information on Murray's condition was immediately available, so it is not known whether Murray was removed because he allowed two goals on 14 shots or his health was less than 100 percent.
