Murdoch closes Australian titles

Rupert Murdoch's Australian outfit, News Limited, is closing three titles and a weekly magazine on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

The Noosa Journal and Weekender will publish for the last time next week, along with local editions in Maroochydore and Caloundra.

News Limited executive Jerry Harris said the company regretted the closures "but with continuing slow trading conditions on the Sunshine Coast the reality is that they are no longer commercially viable."

Though the publisher hopes to redeploy some staff there will be redundancies.

News will continue to have a strong presence in the region through its main daily title, the Brisbane-based Courier-Mail. Harris said that paper will improve Sunshine Coast coverage

Its main rival in the area is APN, which is partly owned by Ireland's Independent News & Media. And there are also several independent titles.
