Murdo Fraser's call for ‘no more Buddhists’ at Rangers branded ‘discriminatory’

A CALL from a Tory MSP for “no more Buddhists” as Rangers manager has been branded “divisive and discriminatory”.

It comes after Russell Martin was sacked by the football club after just 17 games in charge.

Murdo Fraser, who is a Rangers fan, took to social media afterwards and said: "No more vegans, Buddhists (sic) or Green Party members please Rangers.”

The former defender turned manager has been a vegan since 2014, including being the former owner of vegan restaurant Erpingham House.

Martin is also a Green Party member and follows Buddhist teachings to help with "visualisation, manifestation, goal-setting".

The Tory MSP for mid-Scotland and Fife’s comments (below) were condemned on social media, with the Scottish Greens also branding them “divisive and discriminatory”.

"This is a bizarre and ridiculous outburst, even by the repellent and undignified standards of Murdo Fraser,” a party source told The National.

"It is divisive and discriminatory and suggests Buddhists, vegans and Green supporters are not welcome around him - which is a pretty irresponsible message to be sending.”

They added: "If Rangers are to turn things around then the last person they should be taking lessons from is Murdo Fraser who represents a collapsing party and a worldview that is stuck firmly in the past."

A spokesman for Murdo Fraser said: “This was obviously a joke, but Russell Martin’s period at Rangers perfectly illustrates once again how everything goes wrong when Greens get into positions of power.”
