Murderer who stabbed inmate to death over DVD player caught with another shank

A prisoner awaiting sentence for stabbing an inmate to death was caught with a shank in his jail cell.

Adrisse Gray murdered Stephen O'Donnell, 33, in a row over a DVD player at HMP Risley in Warrington.

The 23-year-old attacked O'Donnell in a shower block at the Category C prison on January 22 this year.

He used an improvised shank or shiv, believed to be a sharpened part of a broom, to stab his victim once n the chest.

The killer, who is serving four years and nine months for burglary, admitted murder at Liverpool Crown Court on March 18.

He had been transferred to HMP Altcourse, in Fazakerley, to await sentencing on July 19.

But he today appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court over another shank, found in his cell at the Category B jail on March 23.

The court heard he was caught with the deadly home-made weapon just five days after entering his guilty plea to murder.

Gray - on a video link from the jail - admitted unauthorised possession in prison of a knife or offensive weapon.

According to the charge, he possessed "a bladed or sharply pointed article, namely a sharpened piece of metal with a cloth handle".

Magistrates committed the case to the crown court, to be dealt with by the judge who sentences him for murder.

Gray attacked O'Donnell, who was serving a five-year sentence for inflicting grievous bodily harm, at around 6.15pm.

He struck on the Elton wing of HMP Risley, then made his way back towards his cell before the alarm was raised.

Prison medical staff treated O'Donnell, from Stockport, at the scene and fought to try and save his life.

However, he was transferred to Warrington Hospital by ambulance, where he died at around 7.50pm.

Defence lawyers previously said Gray had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and was prone to "impulsivity and mood swings"

Richard Littler, defending, said the fatal stabbing, which was captured on CCTV, followed an argument concerning a DVD player.

Speaking at the time of his death, O'Donnell's family's said he was "a lovely man".

In a tribute, they said: "Our hearts are broken at the loss of our beloved Stephen. He was a lovely man who was adored by his family and friends.

"He didn't deserve to be taken from us in this way, but nobody can take away the memories that we have of him which we will always treasure."

Detective Inspector Nigel Reid, who led the investigation for Cheshire Police, said: "Gray has pleaded guilty to murder and in doing so has spared Stephen's family the ordeal of having to sit through a trial.

"Our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time and we continue to support them throughout this process.

"A dedicated team of detectives have been working as part of this investigation to build a case and secure justice for Stephen and his family.  I hope that today’s outcome provides them with some comfort."
