Murderer found with knife in Bonhill while out on licence

A murderer was found with a knife in Bonhill while out on licence.

Last week, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard how Alexander Somerville, 45, was stood outside his home address in Raglan Street Lane fumbling for his keys when police officers spotted a Stanley knife on him.

Kevin Doherty, fiscal depute, told how Somerville iis on licence for murder after being convicted in 1993.

He said  a member of the public contacted police after becoming concerned over drunken Somerville, who was standing outside his home on January 30.

He said: "This information was passed to police and they attended and found the accused standing on his doorstep. They noticed his speech was slurred.

“He tried to look for his key and while searching his jacket pocket, he removed a packet of tobacco and a red-handled Stanley knife came out.

“He tried to conceal it but the officers told him to stop what he was doing and recovered the knife from his possession.”

The fiscal depute confirmed Somerville had a previous conviction for murder.

Somerville appeared from custody and pled guilty to having a knife in his possession.

Jonathan Paul, defending, said Somerville had found stability in his life after getting into a relationship but had “spiralled” after his partner died of cancer.

He said: “His previous convictions are of a short nature but are extremely serious.

“I would ask for a full background report. Given the length of time it has been since the conviction for murder, there’s been a lot happening in his life.

“Most noticeably, he had a lengthy period of stability in a loving relationship. His partner died suddenly from cancer and there seemed to be a spiralling of his emotional state.”

Sheriff Simon Pender deferred sentencing until April 18 for background reports.
