Murderer Ben Field had list of 100 more ‘targets’ as he boasted about sick plot

Evil killer Ben Field, who murdered two elderly lovers after convincing them to leave him their fortune, had a long list of future targets, as shown on Channel 4's Catching a Killer.

"Sadist" Ben, a church warden, revealed to investigators his list of people that included his girlfriend and his grandparents, were potential targets who could be "useful" to him to fraud in the future.

But his chilling plans were cut short after police put two and two together when Peter Farquhar, 69, and 83-year-old Ann Moore-Martin died while in a relationship with him.

Both had named Ben in their wills after he drugged and duped them, letting them believe that they were in a loving relationship, and convincing them their health was failing so they would draw up an urgent will.

Detective Mr Glover, who came out of retirement to bring Field down, called the murderer a “psychopath, sociopath and possibly even a sadist” who was addicted to killing.

Talking about the killer’s list of potential victims, he told the Mirror: “He didn’t say it was a list of 100 people he was going to kill, but he didn’t deny that either.

"He did say they were all people that were useful to him that he could deceive in one way or another.

Ann Moore-Martin's family became suspicious when they discovered she had recently written Ben Field into her will (PA)

"It included his grandparents, Smith, Smith’s parents, his girlfriend, his girlfriend’s mother. He identified them all as potential targets."

Martyn Smith, 32, was accused of conspiring with him to murder Ms Moore-Martin but they were both cleared of that charge.

Mr Glover went on: “They all had no children to inherit from the will, so it made things slightly easier. Those were the kind of people he would target for fraud.”

The shocking case was shown on Channel 4's Catching a Killer, which horrified viewers as they watched Ben's first victim's body being exhumed so they could check for evidence he was drugged.

Ben was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 36 years at Oxford Crown Court in October 2019 by Mr Justice Sweeney.
