Murdered journalist Lyra McKee's mum dies of 'broken heart' weeks before anniversary of daughter's death

The mother of murdered journalist Lyra McKee died last night just weeks ahead of the first anniversary of her daughter's killing.

Joan Lawrie passed away in a Belfast hospital last night.

Posting on social media, a family member said: "My wee Mother In Law, passed away last night of a broken heart. Unable to live without her baby Lyra.

"My Wee mother in law whom I loved with all my heart, I Will love you to beyond eternity. Mother and daughter rest in forever peace. #Lyramckee#joanmcke ."

Lyra, 29, was killed on April 18 last year as she observed rioting in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Ms McKee was standing near a police vehicle when she was hit by a bullet fired by a masked gunman towards officers.

The Belfast writer was living in Londonderry with her partner Sara Canning.

An extremist group styling itself as the New IRA claimed responsibility.

Paul McIntyre, 52, has been charged with her murder.

McIntyre is charged with murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and belonging to or professing to be a member of a proscribed organisation.
