Murder victim Justin McLaughlin was facing knife charges after teenage boy ‘slashed’ in ‘unprovoked attack’

Murdered teenager Justin McLaughlin was facing knife charges after a teenage boy was ‘slashed’ in an ‘unprovoked attack’.

The 14-year-old appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court on October 7 - just nine days before he was fatally injured during an incident at High Street station in Glasgow on Saturday, October 16.

The St. Ambrose High pupil was charged with an offence of “serious or violent nature” before being released on bail, legal documents state.

It is understood that the charges were connected to the hospitalisation of a 17-year-old youth who was allegedly knifed at a reservoir near Coatbridge.

The 14-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital on Saturday (UGC)

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was rushed to hospital for treatment of his serious injuries before later being released.

Officers previously launched a public appeal for information and said a ‘number of youths’ were present at the beauty spot between Townhead and Glenboig on August 28.

The legal document, seen by the Daily Record, reads: “Justin McLaughlin appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court on 7 October 2021.

“The accused was granted bail… In addition to the standard bail conditions, the court told the accused that he must not approach or contact (the complainer) in anyway.

“The Procurator Fiscal will now consider the evidence in more detail.”

Meanwhile, police have said a horrific train gang attack the day before Justin’s murder is not linked to the killing.

A shocking video emerged which showed a teenager being chased through train carriages on Friday morning.

The 13-year-old victim is now being treated in hospital for his injuries, with reports of him having been in a coma following the attack.

Police confirmed that three teenagers aged 13, 15 and 16, had been charged in connection with the attempted murder of the 13-year-old, which took place on a train between Glasgow Queen Street and Bellgrove stations.

A 16-year-old male, who cannot be named for legal reason, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with murdering McLaughlin.

He is also charged with assault to severe injury, threatening behaviour and having a bladed item in a public place.

The youth made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Justin’s classmates held a special assembly when they returned to school.

Pupils have been offered counselling and support.
