A man called a woman holding a knife "a black dog" before he stepped forward and the weapon went into him, a witness has told a jury.
Lily Ridgeway, 22, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Jason Adams, 27, outside a Raymond Terrace home, north of Newcastle, on February 29, 2020.
The defence disputes the prosecution claims that Ridgeway stabbed him deliberately, intending to inflict really serious injuries and was not acting in self-defence.
Her friend Nikita Hanson has told the NSW Supreme Court jury that Mr Adams was bailed to live at her Raymond Terrace address but had been told to leave on the night of February 28.
He was "making movements on me which made me uncomfortable" and Ridgeway had contacted two men to escort him from the house.
Prosecutor Brian Costello on Friday took Ms Hanson through a series of increasingly acrimonious and expletive-laden text exchanges between her and Mr Adams over the next few hours.
He briefly came back outside at one stage when "I gave him a pair of pants and jacket and a phone charger, bong and a bowl full of weed".
The angry texts continued, including her saying she had pushed him away so many times and him saying he never tried to sleep with her.
"I have never seen myself so mentally unstable as that night," Ms Hanson told the jury.
Just before he returned, she wrote "World War Three" and he said "yeah it's about to start".
She had been "relaying the messages out loud" to Ridgeway and her relative Mark Russell, who were with her in her bedroom.
She then heard the voice of Mr Adams in the street saying come out and stab him.
The women jumped up and Ridgeway went outside while Ms Hanson stopped at the verandah telling her to come back.
There was a "commotion" and she heard a phone smash and Mr Adams saying it had belonged to someone who had died.
She saw a knife in Ridgeway's hand, while Mr Adams was being aggressive, calling her "a black dog" and saying the phone had been smashed.
"Lily had the knife and he stepped in towards her and the knife had gone into him," she said.
Second earlier she heard Mr Adams saying "go on c***, stab me".
Ms Hanson said she didn't hear Ridgeway say anything when she came inside, but heard the tap turn on and dry-retching.
She called Ridgeway a taxi before calling an ambulance.
Mr Costello previously told the jury he expected Ms Hanson would tell them that Ridgeway said to her: "Oh babe, you should have felt that, it felt so good" before fleeing the scene.
Her evidence is expected to continue on Monday.
