A Supreme Court judge has ruled the murder trial of NT Police officer Zachary Rolfe will be delayed until further notice.

Constable Rolfe is accused of murdering Kumanjayi Walker, an Indigenous teenager who was fatally shot in the remote community of Yuendumu, north-west of Alice Springs, in November 2019.

Prosecutors Phillip Strickland SC and Sophie Callan SC are based in Sydney and are unable to travel to Darwin without quarantining due to current coronavirus travel restrictions.

The trial was due to start on Monday, July 26.

According to a spokesperson from the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Acting Justice Dean Mildren adjourned the trial "to a date to be fixed".

The parties are due to return to court next Wednesday for a mention.

The court had previously heard Mr Strickland and Ms Callan would apply for travel exemptions but had not heard back.

Constable Rolfe and his legal team have appeared in closed court pre-trial hearings every day this week, while prosecutors have appeared via video link from Sydney.

Constable Rolfe has previously indicated he intends to plead not guilty to the charge.
