Murder suspect released under investigation following death of woman taken to hospital with 'numerous injuries'

A man who was arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in hospital has been released under investigation.

Police were called at around 1.50pm on Saturday after reports a woman, who had been taken to hospital after falling ill, had numerous injuries.

The woman, who is in her 40s, died a short time later.

An investigation was launched and a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A large number of police and ambulance vehicles were seen on Lime Road, Stretford on Saturday afternoon in connection with the investigation.

A Home Office post-mortem took place on Sunday, and as a result police will conduct further enquiries.

The suspect has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries, a GMP spokesman added.

She said a 'criminal investigation' remains ongoing.

Speaking on Sunday, Det Chief Insp Liz Hopkinson of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Firstly, my thoughts are with the woman’s family after we have sadly had to inform them that their loved one has passed away.

“We will be following every line of enquiry that is available to us to find out exactly what led to her death and will provide any updates as and when we can.”
