Croydon murder: Man arrested after woman, 19, stabbed to death in south London

A 19-year-old woman from India who had recently arrived in the UK was found stabbed to death in Croydon.

Police were called to a property in Ash Tree Way, Croydon, at 4.10pm on Sunday after receiving a report that a woman had died at the residential address.

A Met Police spokesman said that the woman was found dead at the scene having suffered stab wounds.

Witnesses on Monday described how armed police backed up by a helicopter swooped on the leafy south east London street.

A neighbour said: “There was a police helicopter and armed officers. It was chaos. A guy ran out of the house covered in blood. Police arrested him and he was bandaged by paramedics and then taken off.

“The police were then talking to a girl from the house and she was saying she didn’t hear anything because she had her headphones on and she she was speaking to her family in India.

“A couple bought the house but had been letting it out.

"There have been loads of people living there of all generations. There was a kid of around five, elderly people and a girl of around 19 and a bloke in his 20s. I think they were all from India."

Another neighbour said: “There was pandemonium last night, there were police everywhere. They kicked the door open of the house where it happened."

A 23-year-old suspect was arrested at the property but was taken to hospital for treatment to a minor head injury, the spokesman said.

He said: “Officers attended along with ambulance colleagues. A 19-year-old woman was found suffering stab injuries and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

“The woman is believed to be an Indian national who is thought to have arrived in the United Kingdom relatively recently.

“Officers are working to trace and inform her family.

“A 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. He has been taken to hospital suffering a minor head injury.

“The man and woman were known to each other. At this stage, nobody else is sought in connection with the murder investigation."
